A Wide Horizon
There are truly as many points of view about Life as there are people on Earth. But it seems as though our line of work greatly defines our take on life. It is from this observation that I decided to include testimonials from all corners of the Human body of knowledge: artists, entrepreneurs, spiritual teachers, psychologists, biologists, etc. Each one carries different information and presents a different angle on the topic of Meaning/Purpose.
Biologists and Ethnologists offer an evolutionary perspective, a very body-oriented explanation that helps us better understand our evolution as sentient mammals and the Apex predator on this Planet.
Psychologists offer insight into the empirical research their profession has made on healthy and unhealthy states of mind, and how the presence or absence of a sense of Meaning or Purpose can greatly affect one’s mental health.
Business people offer an outcome-based point of view. Their way of life is through analysis, goal-setting and measuring. It is an action-oriented philosophy, one that perceives Meaning or Purpose from the point of view of the Achiever. Some have a larger, more spiritual Purpose as the end-goal, but an emphasis is always put on defining goals, obtaining results, reaching the target, …
Artists, of course, sing loud and clear the glory of their deepest calling, and the struggle they sometimes endure trying to clarify and answer that calling. For artists, unless they treat their art as a business, it is less about reaching a goal than it is about being all that one be when it comes to their freedom of expression.
Finally, spiritual teachers give us a more holistic, less specialized point of view on the matter. They help us understand and navigate our journeys through life, and the very basis for this journey: our bodies, minds and souls.
